Three-time Olympic medalist Tori Bowie, who passed away in early May at the age of 32, was in the process of giving birth at the time of her death, as confirmed by Bowie’s agent, Kimberly Holland, in an interview with CBS News on Monday.

Holland stated that Bowie’s death was a result of complications during childbirth. It was previously reported that Bowie was at her residence in Florida when the incident occurred.

Addressing the various speculations surrounding Tori Bowie death, Holland expressed her disappointment, particularly with the media, for suggesting that Bowie may have harmed herself. She emphasized the hurtfulness of such speculations and hoped that with the revelation of the truth, apologies would be extended.

An autopsy report obtained by USA TODAY Sports revealed that Tori Bowie, the world champion sprinter and three-time Olympic medalist, passed away due to complications arising from childbirth.

The report, issued by the Orange County (Fla.) Medical Examiner’s Office, stated that Bowie had a well-developed fetus and was approximately 8 months pregnant, undergoing labor at the time of her untimely demise in May. Medical officials cited potential complications, including respiratory distress and eclampsia, which refers to the occurrence of seizures following a sudden increase in blood pressure during pregnancy, as stated by the Cleveland Clinic.

“Eclampsia usually manifests after the 20th week of pregnancy. Although rare, it affects less than 3% of individuals with preeclampsia. Eclampsia can lead to pregnancy complications and necessitates immediate medical attention,” as stated by the Cleveland Clinic.

The track and field community was shocked by Bowie’s sudden passing. Following her second-place finish in the 100 meters in Rio, Bowie went on to win the event at the world championships in London the following year.
